TomTom Rider 2 - lack of memory

I have the original 2GB SD card in my TT.  This is not big enough to take the new European  map I paid for.
I've tried every way which to use a none TomTom 4GB SD card
According to the support notes on the TT site 4GB SD cards need both the application and one or more voices present on them to work.  I tried this on the 4GB SD card I have, nothing going. So if I buy a TT 4GB SD card will this work? Does it come preloaded with the required software? I look forward to your responce with interest. Why can I not use my 4GB SD card?

4GB SD cards won't work: They are out of the SD standard which goes to maximum 2GB.

4GB SDHC cards should work. No no-name products! SanDisk or Transcend cards should be OK.

SDHC cards with more than 4GB capacity will not work.

Important: Rider & Rider 2nd must have been booted under Firmware 7.901 immediately before inserting a 4GB SDHC card. Earlier firmware versions won't "understand" SDHC cards.

  • Ensure Firmware 7.901 is installed at your old SD and your Rider 2nd sucessfully booted from it.

  • Connect the Rider 2nd to the PC. Do not start TomTom HOME (close TomTom HOME if it starts automatically). The Rider 2nd is shown as a separate device under Windows. So you have access to all files at the original SD card.
  • Copy all contents except the large Map drawer (maybe named Great_Britain) of the original SD card to a separate drawer at your PC. Then copy all contents of this drawer to the new formatted 4GB SDHC.
  • Now put this pre-configured SDHC into the Rider 2nd, connect it to the PC and start TomTom HOME: You should be able to install your new bought european map via TomTom HOME. Note: Ensure the Rider 2nd is connected to the charging adaptor since it will not be charged by mini USB.

External USB 2.0 readers are much faster than the USB 1.1 of your Rider 2nd. You may use an external card reader for all copy actions and for installation of the new map via TomTom HOME.

@kumo

to your post;

"4GB SD cards won't work......................................."

This is not true.
I also use 4 GB SD cards. And they all work without problem.

Re: TomTom Rider 2 - lack of memory

Hi Kawa-Drifter :smileyhappy:

I recognize reports in the other forum (you know which)...

From those reports I understood that most 4GB SDHC will work at the Rider but not at the One 1st edition.

And vice-versa most 4GB SD cards will not work at the Rider but very well at the One 1st edition.

My intention was to post the safest version (SDHC) for the Rider.

Re: TomTom Rider 2 - lack of memory

Hi Do not now if you sorted this yet BUT Tomtom Rider will work witha 4GB Card (Although some from Tomtom say it will not)

I have a Tomtom Rider 1 and a Rider 2 and both are running without problems using a SanDisc Ultra 11 SDHC  4GB CARD.

Re: TomTom Rider 2 - lack of memory

Hi, tried a 4GB SDHC Transcend card on my Rider 2.

Followed your instructions.

TT2 works well with the larger SDHC

Only issuse I have is that all my favs were wiped out

Additionaly once I have added a fav or two and update at a later time the TT2 wipes them out of existance!

Also the home location  :smileysad:

Other than that everything works well.

Can you be of any further assistance?

Favs are related to a specific map and will not be transferred automatically.

The favs are stored in the file mapsettings.cfg which is located inside the map drawer.

Try to copy the mapsettings.cfg from the old map into the new map.

Re: TomTom Rider 2 - lack of memory

Harleyian,

Below is the response I received from Tech Support.

It works but is a pain in the you know what and it should be simpler.

Regards

Peter

Hi Peter,
I apologise for the bad wording there. The Favourites and Home ARE deleted when you update the maps. It's an error we have so it's not your fault as implied by my previous response.
The way you can transfer them to your new map is as follows:

How to transfer Favourites from one map to another.

Favourites are stored in a file with extension .cfg (usually called MapSettings.cfg). This file is located inside the map folder (i.e. Western_Europe).

However, since this file also contains all sorts of other map settings it should not be transferred to another map (even if the other map covers the same region). It can prevent the other map from loading properly.

Instead, we recommend to save all the Favourites as Points of Interest (POIs), and then transfer all the POIs over to the new map. Follow the steps below to learn how to do this:

Important! The .cfg file can be copied, but there is no guarantee that it will work 100%. We do recommend saving important locations as POIs instead of Favourites - see the public FAQ Advantages of POIs over Favourites.

The following steps are also available as a public FAQ: Transferring Favourites to new map. Please note that some models such as ONE 3rd Edition and ONE 30 Series do NOT have this option.
Create a new POI category (click here to show or hide images)

Go to Change Preferences > Manage POIs (you may need to select Show ALL Menu Options first)

Tap Add POI category

Type a name for the POI category (eg Favourites)

Select a marker (icon) for the POI category, which will appear on the map

Tap Add POI and select the category you have just created

Tap Favourites and select the Favourite you would like to add to this POI category

Rename the POI if you like. Then tap Done

Repeat step 5, 6 and 7 until all your Favourites are saved as POIs.

Copy the POI category to the computer

Connect the TomTom device to the computer and open TomTom HOME

Click on Manage my Device

Click on the plus (+) sign next to Points of Interest

Tick the POIs to transfer and click on Copy to Computer

You can now install the new map

Copy the POI category from your computer back to the other map

In TomTom HOME, click on Add Traffic, Voices, Safety Cameras etc

Click on Items on my computer

Click on Points of Interest and click on Add next to the ones to transfer
