"You cannot use this map on this device."

So today, I updated the map on my TomTom START. Now when I try to switch the unit on, I get the error "Problem with map: you cannot use this map on this device". It asks me to choose a map, but only gives me one option, and selecting that option brings up the error again.

Plugging my TomTom into my Computer no longer does anything; it's not recognised by the Home program or by Windows as a mass storage device, so I can't reset it or do anything.

I've held the power button for over a minute, but do not hear any drum roll sounds.

What can I do to turn my device on again? I don't even care about updating the map anymore, I just want it to work, 3 year old maps are better than none.

Take the back cover off the unit. At the bottom, to the left of the usb port is a small reset hole. Use a paperclip to press the reset.

Then turn it on and see if the computer (and Home) recognize the unit.

Thanks for the reply.

Unfortunately, it seems to behave exactly the same way after the reset as it did before. Still won't be recognised by the computer, still won't fully boot up until I select a map.

Just for the heck of it, can you reboot the computer and try once more, please?

Rebooting made the computer recognize it again. My thanks to you, dhn.

I have more or less the same problem except that the computer recognises the start device but after update it still reads the same message. I have tried all the tips on this page to no avail

April 13, 2012   Same issue.    The Totom works by itself.  I get the error code when trying to operate the tomtom via the computer.

@ Cantsortit, Zahmed and Steve: Could you tell which TomTom model you have? See here for the model: http://www.tomtom.com/9521. Which application version is currently installed on the device? Do you know which map (version) is installed? You can find it by opening the .pna file inside the map folder using Notepad for example.

Re: "You cannot use this map on this device."

Hi. I had the same problem so I rang the Tom Tom help line. They said that there must have been a problem during the download. They then put the map back onto my account so I could download it again

Hope that helps
