I've backed up as recommended, except it stopped 5secs before completing with the following error: "cannot read from the source file or disk 'ephem' ". However it seems all other files are backed up, including "Australia". I also have the original "backup 01" from 2007 when I first purchased it. What next?

Hey Traylaw. Please refer to my entries of Sunday and yesterday. Could you please guide me to my next step?

A couple of things, what model gps do you have, if you give me the first two letters of the serial number that will help.
Since you are getting an error copying the files onto your pc, you probably will want to copy just one folder to your pc. This would be your map folder and it is important that you do not get any error when you copy it. The map folder will be have the name similar to the the area the map covers, so in your case it should be named Australia.
A, Once you are sure you have a good copy of your map saved away. You can format the memory of the gps.
|
B. If format was successful reinstall the application and a voice on your gps per the attached link.
( note if you have a model xxl540 don't use the following method, I will need to send you a link for a direct download of
the files you will need )
http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_
Note: when reinstalling the gps software you may have to perform up to three updates to get everything installed. The gps may not work correctly until all the updates are installed. Be sure to restart Home and the gps between each update. If the gps won't connect to the computer normally just reset the gps with it connected to the computer. The gps should automatically try to connect to the pc.
C . Next use windows explorer and copy the map folder on your pc back to your gps.
D. If the gps is working now, there are a few misc files like startup / shutdown screens that you can copy back to
the gps from the backup copynyou made.
Here is a list of those files. Just use windows explorer to copy them from the main directory of the backup to the main directory in the gps. Do worry if you do not find all these files are not on your backup. Not all gps models have all these files.
1. antitheftw.bmp (this may have the named antitheft.bmp)
2. autorun.inf
3. splashw.bmp (this may have the named splash.bmp)
4. suspendw.bmp (this may have the named suspend.bmp)
5. tomtom.ico
If everything is working ok now we recommend making a final backup of your gps. That way if something happens in the future all you have to do is delete everything on the gps and copy the backup to the gps and you are done.

Traylaw,
Thanks for your help. All good now. Although following initial loading of the application, the following error came up: "Error when contacting server. You have an invalid version of TomTom application installed on your TomTom device......." I ignored this and initiated another update, then again, and all worked OK, no more errors.
Thanks again

Great, glad you got your gps up and running. Yes after formatting it will take three updates with the xl340 before it is working properly this is normal. Now be sure to create a backup using windows explorer
