My original TomTom's touch screen calibration has gone bad. I cannot 'touch' the letters at the far right during data entry because the entire data input screen's touch mapping has shifted right by about half a column. The touchscreen mapping for the other functions is still good. Has TomTom forgotten to retain compatibility with their original device?

The sensing area for all functions except typing is fairly large which is why they don't seem affected.
You can try to manually calibrate the screen, some people have had some success with it.

The actual problem is that the digitizer is failing.

Thanks. Did calibration. Five minutes of trial and error and my TomTom Go is working perfectly. Nothing dying that I can see
Not to fret, we own four TomTom's in this household. Good to know there are 'repairable' as the age gracefully.

Glad the calibration worked for you.
On a different subject: Be sure to backup you gps's. We recommend using windows explorer. Note that each gps should be backed up separately since the maps are not interchangable between different gps.
See this link for the procedure.

Froglips, There is another user which just showed up with the same problem. Since you have just been through this your wisdom and guidance would be helpful. Here is the link to this thread.

I have the original TomTom Go 720 purchased in April 2008. I purchased also in April 2011 6 Italian map updates. After last update the touch screen calibration has gone bad. I cannot 'touch' the icons at the top of the screen during data entry. If I tip an icon at the bottom of the touchscreen I display the correct content of the icon tipped. But, if I tip an icon at the top of the screen then I always display the icon immediately below. Its' a particular case because the entire data input screen's touch mapping has not entirely shifted down.
It's incredible that after purchasing an official map from TomTom web site now it's impossible to use the entire application. I have to buy another TomTom since repair costs are 105 eur.
Any advice is welcomed
