Very interesting discussion. A few weeks back I purchased a new Tom Tom Via (I believe it was a 1405). I folowed all the instructions, did the ask question for help and to no avail would it connect to the internet through TomTom Home. Yes I did all the things suggested and was about to return it to the retailer when my son (who is a computer tech trained by Micro Soft) the following is a note he typed to go along with the Via when I returned it to the store.
Software Tested On Clean Installation WinXP SP-3

MyTomTom - InstallMyTomTomSA.exe - version 3.2.0.700 - USB device connection detected, model identifies as 1500 series, selects spanish updates on english profile and offers downloads but no method to install them on the GPS unit.
TomTomHOME - TomTomHOMEwinlatest.exe -version 1.5.106.0 - USB device connection not detected.
TomTomHOME - TomTomHOME2winlatest.exe - version 2.9.0.0 - USB device connection not detected.
Unit cannot be fully used as indicated and cannot be updated to resolve issues. TomTomHOME application will not recognize unit, and thus computer cannot be used to allow use of features available to computer users. Problem exists on all computers the GPS was tested with.
He did not find any fault with my computer and in addition it did not work so hot with my TomTom XL so I'm now without a TomTom Home that works satisfactorily. All in all I guess it isn't all that bad for me as the gps still works. Maybe someday they'll get it right. I'd also like to point out that in my opinion a user can get a more personal help on these forms that on the TomTom site pages. LOL just my opinion I'll lose the sour taste in a month or so, but I did like the Via
