Try to empty the cache in MyTomTom. Have you tried with Google Chrome or Firefox also? Try to run the update again.

Have tried installing it on a different computer using Chrome. It is now asking for an activation code but I don't know where to find it.

Either enter the code you get in MyTomTom on www.tomtom.com or call customer services to get it activated.

no code received from mytomtom, cannot contact customer services, because they do not work weekends

Have just spoken to ttw partners.(They supplied this device.) I am not the only one having problems, seems like it is a fault on TomTom system.
