Sorry to hear this bluesman...Lemme see if I can help,
First off,I need to know which device you have, until we get it running
we can work off that....
Ok, you wrote that it worked fine until you "tried to reload the unit".
So,you used it,all good there, then what exactly happened?...You shut it off and the next time you went to use it,
it would'nt power up?,Or,did it crash/lock up and then the problem was there?
Im just unclear about the events,I need to understand them in order to see if I can help figure this out.....
Let me know,I'll see what/if I can do to help,or at least I can talk a couple of the Guru's and see if we can you up and running....

Ok ..let's dig through this....
First off let me get the rest of my bearings straight so we
stay on track and focus....
So,you got the gps from a friend? That might be part of the problem right there...
The map you're trying to download....Is this a PURCHASED map.I see a "m" suffix...
as in XL350M.....if this is the deal I have your answer already....but you're not going to like it....
Although sometimes in very rare occasions map services carry over to purchasers of USED gps products.
Once the gps was registered from your friend(if it was that is) that's it...the map update is registered to him and his account,it doesn't transfer,he can't sell it to you.You have to buy map updates and have your own TomTom account(TT Home) only way around this is if he gives you his account along with the deal, sometimes you can change the email and get away with it but usually they catch on and you have to buy your own updates....
Fill me in,we'll go from there....if your friend "didn't" register the gps with TomTom and "you're" actually the first person to do this we can look at your browser configuration and fiure this out for you.....
Lemme know

Let's assume everything is as if you just went and purchased the gps, went to update your map and now you have this problem....
Read through this link....give it a try and see what becomes of it.....
Look through the Windows Vista option,it's the closest to Win7

just a note if I could get it to reconize the device and said yes....lol I never get that far than this is the crock of the problem....

If not already done, make a backup of the navigation device:
Secondly
Ask your friend that he still has a working backup on his computer. When he has then you are able to restore the device from the backup. Make a working full backup onto your computer.
How to restore a full backup?
In case your friend doesn't has a backup:
Contact the TomTom Support Team to verify that you've bought the correct map for the device (when for example having selected another navigation device) during purchase then the map will not work onto your device.

Remove the map from the device with TomTom Home
Remove previous downloaded maps from the computer
Download and install the map
