@Brian73_cleary: Try to empty the cache in the MyTomTom application's settings menu, and try the update with Google Chrome or Firefox.
If that didn't work out:

I have a very similar problem. Tomtom start 20 failed updating European maps 8.85. It stuck on 68 % instalation and message appears "something has gone wrong". Now there is just a notice on GPS "maps not found". As I understand it is somehow connected with memory matters. Mytomtom shows that start 20 memory is almost full. Any solutions?
