Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

I'm assuming that anyone with space problems has also copied and transferred all unused voices to their computer, before deleting them from the device. Computer TTS voices in particular take up a lot of room. Once copied to a computer for any possible future use, they can be deleted from the device. I think you have to use TomTom Home to do this. If there is a way to do it using a file browser, I don't know of it, so someone else will have to advise those who don't feel confident enough to rely only on TomTom Home.

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

@Charlie

Other than breaking up the Europe maps by loading by zones as needed, there isn't a way unless you revert back to the older version of the Europe maps.  One reason they grew so much is that some countries were added.

Maybe you can raise enough stink at the corporate level of Tomtom to get them to up the storage memory on the device, I wish you luck.  Perhaps you could start a blog or Facebook page to attract some attention.

I believe the faces.dat file is the file of building/parks/river images.  You could delete that file and keep all the road mapping, and probably get both maps to still fit.

Also, crpoi.dat stores additional POI information like street addresses, the stuff on the "details" tab.   In map 865 and later, Tomtom replaced street addresses with websites (how useless - what a dumb move...).   You can delete crpoi.dat, and still keep your POI's coordinates and phone numbers.  That also can save some space.

Before doing any of the above, make a backup of your map first.

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

I would do the Zone Breakup but neither the US or Europe Maps seem to give me that option.  No where in the TOMTOMHOME application or map update download do I see the option that is described in the Tomtom help section on zones!!!

You should give TomTom support a voice call (not a message through their web interface).

The NA map is not zoned.

Go to Manage my Device in Home (2nd page, purple folder), Device tab, maps and see what's listed. If you see Europe, you should see a link to change zones

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

Thats exactly what I did......and no where do I see anything about Western and Central Europe having the zoning option.

I intend to call TomTom support later today, or whenever I can get thru to them.  I am not a happy customer and I'm about to sell my TomTom at a loss on Ebay and buy a Garmin unit.

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

Finally got some help from TomTom tech support.  The Map Zone instructions on the website are indeed completely inadequate!  I'll try to summarize what it took to make this work.

1. You must have North America on your device

2. You must have Europe on your computer

3. Use TomTom Home 'Add Maps' as usual but don't let it bully you into deleting the North America map before it adds Europe.

4. You must uncheck the boxes that it suggests to encourage you to delete North America.

5. Click the ADD button anyway and it will divert you to the Europe Map Zone ADD utility.....FINALLY!!!

6. Select the Europe Map Zone you want to add and click the button to add and you are all set.

So frustrating but so easy after I got help from the Tech Support folks.

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

I absolutely agree this is false advertising.  I'm off to England next week and bought this device based on good experience of my kids with the 340 US only version.   I too expected the "world traveller" to hold all the maps. And like the my fellow traveller would have preferred to pay a bit extra for the device for that ability.

I just received my device yesterday and spent the whole evening trying to get this working right. The security key for the map updates didn't work and so I had to call tech support immediately after updating the software.  It was then that I learned I would also have to delete all the NA maps in order to load just WESTERN Europe - never mind Eastern and Southern.

So I left the thing unattened for two hours while it did it's backup and returned to find the process had failed after my hard drive ran out of space!  This was supposed to be simple!

I'm considering returning the thing after all the frustration.  I'll see how it goes tonight after I clean up my hard drive and try this again.

Why do companies always have to cheap out?  Memory is not that expensive anymore.  No excuse for this.

Re: XXL 540 WTE (N. America and Europe) can't store both regions simultaneously

The last software update Jun 13 hung the device at the tomtom flash screen.  I did everything they told me to do then did an RMA to returned the device, got a 2GB one back, returned that one, got a 4gb back and did one update and hung the device, RMA that one too, but I get this note from them that they are not going to be returning a new or repaired device.  I used it for 4 months and this is crap.  I should at least get a prorated refund based on the 1 year warranty.
