Bought a new map of Europe for Tom Tom XL 30 series yesterday. Tried downloading but not enough space (no memory card slot so have to rely on built in memory only). Tom Tom claims to have half of 1GB space available but I can only find files amounting to around 65MB. I have deleted the old map (I realise I should not have now) but Tom Tom claims I need to free up a further 200MB space to download one single map zone. There are only around 50MB of files actually showing on the device through Tom Tom HOME. What can I delete? How can I get the new map - or any map - onto the Tom Tom? Why do the properties in Explorer show over 400MB occupied when I can only count around 65MB? I have run CHKDSK and defragged but no help.
Have now paid for a useless map and now appear to have a useless Tom Tom - my wife needs to travel in 12 hours!
Any help hugely appreciated. Thanks

Thanks - actually I have now fixed it (finally). Whilst I usually use a PC to update the sat nav on one occasion I had used a Mac. A friend suggested I reconnect to the Mac and look for hidden or deleted files (the sat nav was telling me there was over 400MB in use but I could only see less than 100MB on the PC). When I reconnected the sat nav to the Mac, I found the hidden file, deleted it and then emptied the Trash. I was then able to reinstall the new map (or at least, one zone).
I am not hugely impressed with this company or its producs now - having spent money on a new map, it should be a very easy thing to install - I am a little more technically savvy than many and I had major difficulties so how any non-techie is able to cope I just don't know. Also I often find Tom Tom Home doesn't start properly, my sat nav crashes frequently etc. All a bit sloppy really for the leading brand.
Thank you again for your help Andrew, and I am looking forward to trying out the new map across Europe this summer.
Regards
Brian

I have the same problem.
I paid for a new cart and when I tried to install it, I was told that I haven't enough space.
How can I format the device?
When formating, what about erasing the software and not only the map?

WAIT!
Don't start playing around with formatting ..... yet.
What model do you have? And, are you by chance using a Mac?

It is a ONE Third Edition with a 1 Gb memory.
My computer works with Windows.

Make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. If not sure how, see here.
http://www.tomtomforums.com/t17864-how-backup-cont
Then, ensure your updated map (in compressed format) is here:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\
If so, delete the contents of the existing map folder on the unit but leave the folder itself.
Then try to manually install the compressed map without using Home. See here:

Thank you for your answer, but it seems very complicated and I have no time enough before my travel.
Thanks again.

I am having the same problem with my XXL 540-T. I spent 3-4 hours on the phone with TomTom techincal help today and still have not resolved the issue. I purchased a new map and now not only do I not have the new map, the technician had me delete my old map. I now have nothing and the phone lines are closed until Monday when I'm leaving for my trip. What do I do now? I am not computer illiterate, but I don't understand much of what you guys are saying.

The instructions I set out in my previous post apply to you.
EXCEPT........................
Go to the location where the downloaded cab file is located:
C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\TomTom\HOME\Downloads\complete\maps\
and open the cab file with WinRar but do NOT install yet!
Look in the specific map folder and I suspect you will see a bunch of cspeechXX.dat files where XX represents an abreviation for each state (and Canada).
If so, delete them! They are meant for models with Voice Control and the 540 doesn't have a microphone, so no VC. They make up tons of megs of space.
Once deleted, try the manual install again (or let Home do it).
In summary: remove any cspeech.dat files FROM the cab file and install the contents of the reduced size cab file.
