On my system, if I connect the Tomtom to the front [it thinks it's USB 1.1 and the download takes forrever.
If I connect to the USB in the back of desktop, downlods in 5 minutes, and installs in about 40 minutes...

I finally got my VIA 1500 with the latest US/Canada & Mexico map updated.
I called support and they gave some instructions. Before updating your map it is extremely important your read the instructions in this web site about updating your map:
http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_
It's very important to turn off your Firewall in your computer and also check your router doesn't have any block ports (usually they are set up at your office).
Go to Windows, Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall and click on "Turn Windows Firewall off"
If you're doing it from your home, DO NOT USE WIRELESS. Connect your computer with a network cable to your router or modem.
In my case, the installation (downloading) stopped in between 7 to 20%.
It's better to do a fresh installation so, go to your MyTomTom icon located in the botton right corner and select "settings" or Open MyTomTom software.
Then, Go to Cache tab and press "Empty the Cache" and unselect "cache lage content items on my computer. Press "Save settings"
Then, Go to "Connection" tab and change the Port from 4000 to 4002, press "Test availability" and if Ok, press "Save settings"
Finally, close your MyTomTom browser, in case was openned it, and re-open it again, connect your GPS and press "check for New Items" located on MyTomTom tab in the web page (preferred to use Internet Explorer or Google Chrome).
It takes about 4 hours, if you have a fast internet connections, change the settings on your computer so it doesn't turn off or go to sleep automatically. set them to "Never".
It worked for me so I hope it worked for anyone, Good luck.....

after 4 month trying to update a Divice that comes with "free maps update"
Sorry you are reading the forums already, don't keep traying the update... TomTom just don't care. " Don't give a Sh..!"
They already make their money from Us... and the free update is just really bad Propaganda.

I would like to know exactly why TOM Tom Support staff are not answering these questions and having them moderate these forums with some answers. Is this like an issue that Tom Tom is not dealing with in every category?
I personally am trying an update and its just sitting there not advancing at all. What do we need to do to get the update running?

Just bought a new TomTom today. Bought the version with lifetime maps. Sure wish I had come to this forum first. We'll see if it completes overnight, but at this rate I doubt it.

It was over 2gig, however I was on an 18mbps wireless connection, using Windows XP SP3. TomTom "Start" with TomTom Home version 2.9. Based on this forum I'm feeling pretty lucky.

Come on TomTom - it's about time you had the decency to answer your critics OR at least accept there is a problem here. I'm running a iMac with 12gb memory on a 40mbit fibre cable and the download s are taking forever with no status as to what on earth is happening apart from updating. It's now been running for over 24 hours - WHAT ON EARTH IS GOING ON???????
Hallo is there anyone at TOM TOM at all????

Might you have a firewall or anti virus package retarding the transer from TT's servers to your computer. Especially something like Kapersky.
