Re: Tomtom spying on us

[ Edited ]

I renewed my Live subscription less than 2 weeks ago - I got the update a few days ago and declined to share for several reasons as a result my subscription fee is wasted I have contacted TomTom and received a pathetic auto reply telling me I need a mandatory update - yet MyTomTom says my device is up to date.

I've now reported them to my card provider for failing to provide the product I paid for. I understand and a somewhat agree that the data sharing is a necessary evil in the modern age however the TomTom T+C's are very unclear with this new policy and are also contradictory - one line says it's entirely anonymous, then further down the script it says it's actually not anonymous for 20 minutes until they anonymise it.

I also disagree with sharing the data with law enforcement agencies as I really believe that this will be used against us in future - one day you'll be driving along and go a couple of mph over the posted limit and there will be a speeding fine automatically generated and dropping onto your doormat withing a few days (or less).

If it's anonymous data them make it anonymous BEFORE it's sent to the Tomtom servers - it's not a difficult thing to do. Look at the mess Google got themselves into deciding that they needed to capture all the WiFi data packets as their mapping cars were driving around - no need for it at all just Big Brother tactics and Corporate greed.

Re: Tomtom spying on us

Within these 20 minutes, TT are not able to connect the data to a specific user. See also Ditte's answer to the following question: http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/LIVE-Services-HD-Traffic-and/HD-Traffic-Must-Share-Personal-Data/m-....

Re: Tomtom spying on us

Megalos,  It clearly states in the very first post on this page :-

http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/LIVE-Services-HD-Traffic-and/Important-sending-anonymous-informatio...

Only if you give us your permission, your navigation device will continously collect information and send it to TomTom at regular intervals.  The information is also stored on your device until you connect it to your PC, then the information is sent to TomTom and deleted from your device.  The information includes details that identify the navigation device, your MyTomTom account name and information entered while you were using the navigation device.

Ditte's reply in the link you have just provided states

TomTom is unable to connect location data to the device or the user, other than to deliver the LIVE services.

Can you not see how that is a very clear contradiction in what TomTom are saying and certainly one of the reasons why I don't trust them at all.

Re: Tomtom spying on us

Mm, yes. I didn't read that part ;-). I think it's indeed good to again ask Ditte (or someone else) to give some clarification on this. As of now, it's still not completely clear what's going on.
