So I don't think my LIVE services have ever worked since I purchased my TOM TOM GO 740 LIVE but wih my schedule i haven't been able to call and ask why? I've fiddled with it a little and it used to just say unable to connect or something similar. Now it says "There is something wrong with your SIM card. Please contact TomTom customer support" which i am currently on hold with them and it doesn't seem like anyone plans to take my call. Anyone else have this problem?

I purchased my TomTom last Thursday and I am having the exact same problem...my version is a 340 XL Live. Ive called the support line several times and no one has answered my call, I should have listened to the sales rep and bought a Garmin.

Have you tried resetting your device?
To Soft-Reset your TomTom Go 740 .
Press and hold the On/Off button (Power Button) until your device restarts . This can take upto 20 seconds.

I've had my 740GO for about a year and when I plugged it into the computer to get updates the other day, it ended up drained of information and no maps. I thought perhaps it was just a dead battery, but it was working the day before. Now the website is telling me I need to add an SD card to load the maps and updates. Not sure about this...anyone know what's going on?

If you get the "Something wrong with my SIM card" issue in the USA, it is probably due to letting your LIVE subscription lapse. The American SIM cards are disabled upon expiration of LIVE subscriptions (or if you buy a refurb with no included trial LIVE period).
Once disabled, you need to contact Tomtom phone support to re-enable the SIM card if you later purchase a LIVE renewal.
Note that this does not happen on European models, where the SIM cards don't expire.
jampam, it sounds like your internal memory was corrupted during the update. Try running a chkdsk /x on the Tomtom drive.

It's not important for this case of course but just for future need: You're wrong, European SIM cards do expire as well. So far we've never found out the exact period of no use after which it expires but we believe it's a maximum of 12 and a minimum of 6 month.

Thanks for the clarification Oskar.
In contrast, USA SIM cards expire immediately upon LIVE expiration.

And thank you for that, didn't know. What if a user decides to renew LIVE services after a certain period? Will the card be reactivated 'on the air' or do you have to send it to TomTom? Do they charge for this?

This issue gets resolved easily with doing a soft reset. Incase you are still getting the error, try performing a Factory reset.
Please note that Favorites and some personal settings gets lost after doing a Hard reset So it is better to backup the settings before resetting the device.

It looks like your 740 has insufficient memory for an updated map. Get a micro Sd card of at least 4GB. (best check the size of USA maps first)
