Re: HD Traffic Reduced Range UK & EU - Unacceptable

I would say this is related to the network coverage of the mobile carrier.

Well coverage is perfect just about everywhere (No that hard since Belgium is pretty small). And rebooting the device solves the issue for ... miles. (can be as little as 10). I thought the live update might have something to do with this. Sorry for the small derailing of the thread.

Here's the Motorway junction for Gatwick Airport...

Here's what it looked like a year ago, not a traffic jam in sight! ... (yes, I WAS driving along it) ...

I've been doing some studying, and the best traffic status available by far is that provided to Google Maps in the UK. At first, I thought that they must be using the HD traffic feed, but it is actually much more detailed and much more up to date than the HD traffic. At least, compared with that on the HD Traffic web site. There is another provider used by some competing satnav devices, but it is poor compared to HD Traffic. When I find out where I can get the Google Maps on a mobile device, I will probably replace my TomTom.

I'll also comment on why people haven't done anything about this. I did complain to the Advertising Standards Agency for the TomTom misleading advert ("traffic information for your whole journey"). But the ASA don't cover companies not in the UK. I then decided that the answer was to complain about the resellers who repeat the advertising, and are based in the UK. But I didn't take action because the last thing I want to do is hurt a retailer who isn't really to blame and cause them costs when they are struggling anyway.

Me, I'm going to let the silent hand do the work. TomTom are letting their evangelists down, and the long term consequences will be felt after it is too late to recover.

Why wait till the most problematic time of year to test the new algorithim?

Or is this just a red herring????

After great deliberation,

"the team working on TomTom HD Traffic. Since our last update they’ve been re-working the algorithm that handles traffic data going to the device. They’re currently planning a mid-December release that will contain a number of improvements"

These improvements will include

  • Continual reboots, as reminder it is winter and travel should be reduced to avoid creating congestion on the roads. (This also will conform HD traffic does work across the country)
  • Limit HD Traffic range to 5 miles, after all you never need to travel far, if at all when winter arrives, especially when snow is falling.
  • Time between HD Traffic updates increased to 20 minutes -  traffic conditions in winter are unlikely to change that quickly as there is less traffic on roads.

Just joking - I HOPE!!!

Re: HD Traffic Reduced Range UK & EU - Unacceptable

But you have to admit, the situation has gone way beyond unacceptable, unsatisfactory and similar epithets. Now, it's just a joke. Not even a cheap joke for all of us who paid up for HD Traffic and have not had it for over a year now. At least if I'd bought it for my iPhone I'd have received some small compensation.
