Disabling the "security alarm", or whatever it is called on the english version, in the menu Live service, was enough to fix the problem for me.
Every 2 minutes or so a lot of data come into the device via the Live service.
Now, if you check the amount of free RAM left (Status and informations/ version informations) you'll see that in normal conditions you have between 12 and 14 MB left free from the 64 MB RAM, but, when the security alarm is activated and the Live data come in the RAM is completly overloaded, no more space to play around = data swaping out of the RAM pushing the satnav to commit suicide i.e. to restart.
TT Live service has grown too big in 2011 to fit well into our antediluvian machines so I think that TomTom should propose a lower cost "Live Service Lite" which would match the old satnav generations capabilities.

what do security alarm do ? if i switch it off what will my tomtom no longer do

I don't know what security alarms mean either but it might be camera alerts. If so, disabling them sort of ruins the whole idea of having a Live edition TomTom.
I really must stop trying to fix this 550 as it;s taking up so much of my time. But today I tried to completely format the device, run clear flash, copy my map (with mapsetting.cfg deleted), mapshare disabled and chkdsk run. Guess what ...........it now restarts almost every time I switch it on even if I have cleared the route before powering down!
Hopefully TomTom will just allow me to send the 550 back for a refund without any further discussion.

"Security alarm" is another understatement for safety camera which have officially been invented for our security not at all to relieve our money !
The speed camera data which come in through Live service are supposedly warning us about mobile speed camera controls which might eventually, who knows, still be there when you happen to pass around.
Usually, at least that's the case in my country, fixed speed camera are not used to "spring up" along the roads just an hour before you are due to pass by, it often takes a litle bit more time to be installed.
Fixed speed cameras position are stored in the map and are updated, when authorized by your country laws, every time you connect the device via TomTom Home.
Then the choice is clear, you have to choose between an ever restarting device or navigate with the Live alerts unchecked, i.e. without the 99 % of the time false mobile speed camera alert.
My opinion is that, with the first choice, you take the chance to miss the 1 % true alerts as a result of the fundamental universe law which states that if something can go wrong it will at the worst moment, i.e your satnav is due to restart just when you arrive in the vicinity of the mobile speed camera.

So how do you disable mobile cameras but leave all the warnings active for fixed cameras?

On your TomTom menu you touch the icon Service Live (Probably Live service on the english version), you then arrive to a sub menu where you should see an icon with 3 speed camera.
Now you must touch the 3 speed camera icon, and on the next sub menu that comes, locate a warning yellow triangle icon picturing a single speed camera.
Here you are, with this button you can activate or disable the Live service for mobile cameras.
After you have done that your Go x 50 will behave normally and the TomTom fixe speed cameras warning will remain active, exactly the same way they are working on non Live Go x 50.

I'm fairly sure that following the advice above will disable all the camera alerts. At least it seems to be the case on my 550.

The way I understand the first sentence, you assume that if ever you dared to try disabling the camera alert ON THE LIVE SECTION of your satnav it would ALSO disable all the camera alerts.
The second sentence seems to imply that you already tried the trick on your Go 550 Live and that all your camera alerts are gone.
If you had ever played with the main menu of your TomTom up to page 7 you would have seen on the right upper corner of the screen a yellow triangle which is the door to open in order to set how you want your alerts to work.
This is there AND NOT in the Live section that you can disable the TomTom camera alerts.
Please, don't be so agnostic and try at no risk the action I recommended, it is fully reversible and you'll then be rewarded for your faith with a fully functioning Go 550 (yet half) Live.![]()

So that seems to be it!! No proper fix lots and lots of posts so must be a big problem but nothing from tom tom. My mate got a new via and has the same prop but they admitted an error with the live services and suspended his account until it was sorted. But us go people get nothing.
Where the best place to buy a garman?
