VIA 1505TM GPS placement not accurate - did I not wait long enough before starting my trip?

I took my new VIA 1505TM on a short trip near my house.  It is entirely possible (probable) that I did not wait for the GPS to lock on to satellite before I started moving, but I assumed the unit would catch up to me.  Is that not the case?

Because all the way down the straight main road (traveling at 45 MPH) it thought I was in the neighborhood to the side of me, as opposed to being on the main road where I was.  It kept trying to tell me how to zigzag out of the neighborhood, naming all these side streets back there, back on to the main road, but I was already on the main road traveling in a straight line.  It only figured out where I was after about 10 minutes of guessing, recalculating, and placing me in the wrong place (and perhaps several stop lights let it catch up to me).

I am considering returning it for this reason, if it is not going to be reliable, but I would like to know if it is absolutely necessary to stay still until the GPS is locked on.

And have others had this issue?

Thanks,

Dave

I suspect that Tomtom like many manufacturers have a snap to road algorithm for navigating as a car on road rather than off road. Will an inaccurate reception it can only decide to snap to one road until it has a better fix. I have seen this on many gps units TT and Garmin etc, esp. if you lose reception under tress etc. Ultimately it resolves itself. With quick fix, usually it takes about 30 seconds to get a fix.

I just purchased a TOMTOM Via 1400.  Can someone please tell me about charging on the computer?  There aren't any lights on this thing.  Do I leave the GPS on while charging or is it OK to turn it off?  How will I know that it is charged completely?

The device may be turned off while charging. There's a battery status icon in the bottom left corner of the navigation screen when not connected to a power source. When the bar is fully green then the device is fully charged.

When the battery is nearly empty, a recharge from 2.5 - 3 hours would be sufficient.:smileywink:
