I have been poking around and have found that MyTomTom uses port 4000 and 54420. actually it always tried to connect to localhost via a 5xxxx port.
On my system it performs a remote connection to IP 169.254.255.1 on port 3129
The reason I mention this is because I recently helped someone who between windows firewall, router firewall and another software firewall had a mess of things causing problems. Depending on how locked down you are, you may have some ports or other items blocked.
For my friend, I turned every firewall off (temporarily), got the updates, then closed everything backup once I saw what was happening and then only opened up what I needed.

Hi Zo,
Thanks for replying. I don't have my computer locked down any more than normal/typical but I did turn off Windows Firewall to test. The results were the same: no new updates.
I download programs and updates all the time and receive email attachments of considerable size, all with no problems.
I would not expect to have any issues downloading an update for my GPS.
While I might allow that there would be some particular circumstance that would require me to turn off the firewall or take other extreme measures to complet an update, I can't imagine that a consumer oriented company would design their program to require this action from all of their users.
I'm happy your solution worked for your friend, no update here.

Sorry that did not work. Thought I would throw it out there just in case it would help someone.
One other item. Under MyTomTom settings under the general tab, is a country displayed in the drop box? And is it the correct country? On one of my PCs, I had a problem connecting and getting updates because no country was specified. Once that was resolved by reinstalling myTomTom, then that PC also worked.
Also, I remember on the second install it asked me to link my device to an email account as well

Spoke to CS 3 times in last two days they were no help... they really have no clue someone needs to share status with these front line folks... the last guy told me it was because i was using ie9 and i needed to go back to ie8 said mytomtom didnt support ie9. however their website says it supports ie7 and higher ![]()
http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_
so uninstalled 9 and went back to 8... absolutley no difference in fact you can put too rest the different browsers theory. i have tried: firefox, chrome, safari, ie8 and ie9 all failed equally.
UPDATE!!!!!! I have finally succeeded both in updating my 1535 TM and activating map code!
Map v870.3398 (it took 1.5 hours on a fios connection 20 mins to down the 2.6GB and rest of time to install)
App 10.157.691589.84
1. disabled bitdefender firewall
2. ran mytomtom program as admin
3. installed using firefox
i did all 3 at same time but im 95% certain it was the firewall... because i had only disabled for 30 min and when it turned back on i had device not responsive showing on mytomtom until i disabled firewall again and all resumed perfectly. just to test browser i used ie9 to activate map code.
1. disabled firewall
2. ran mytomtom as admin
3. activated map code using ie9

I think I'm pretty patient but I have not had any update to my support question in two days even though I have sent in a request for update and also sent in a copy of the log.txt file from the Mytomtom folder. (see below). One would expect that a reply is due.
At least I'm not getting the "your incident will close automatically in 72 hours" emails.
Here's the log file and this is what consistently shows up. Can't imagine that I will ever see an update if the server returns
a 404 error!
As usual, any thoughts/comments or solutions are appreciated.

This thing is a nightmare! I have been on the phone with CS twice. I have map 865 and am trying to install 870. The download to my computer from the server went fine, I get the "something has gone wrong" prompt when attempting to d/l to the GPS.
Here's the error from the log.txt file:
2011-07-18 11:16:14.233|33554532|Error|SupporterManager:
nStatus|PND reports installation failed: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?><jobprogress xmlns="http://www.tomtom.com/ns/device/1.0" deviceid="<unit serial number>" progress="0" state="error" eta="0" />
the first call to CS was a waste. the agent had me delete the cache, which deletes the 2.6GB map file form my computer. I told her this, but she had me do it before she would continue to assist me. Once that was done, she wanted me to d/l the update again. I asked her if she was going to wait on the phone for the next 3 hours with me while it downloaded. She sounds very surprised. I told her, again, it was a 2.6 GB file. So got a reference number, told her I would call when the file d/l'ed.
I called this morning and AGAIN the tech wanted me to clear the cache, I explained to her that issue with and we proceeded on to other troubleshooting. The My tomTom port was changed to 4001, no change in the error. She had me return the unit to factory settings (there goes all my favorites!). No luck. She had me reset the unit. No luck.
She told me she going to send me new unit, because the problem was the unit itself. I was put on hold. She came back and send advanced tech support would call me in 48 hours because they have not seen this error before and wanted to troubleshoot it. So no new unit for me!!
This means I have to send them a screenshoot of the error in I posted and wait! I guess I have to carry my laptop and GPS around with me while I wait.
I hope I'm not working or out in the yard when they call. I have had the unit 2 weeks as of today. They have until Saturday to get it fixed or I will be returning it. What a disappointment. I bought the unit because of previous experience with Tom Tom. But, if they can not get it fixed, I will not purchase another Tom Tom again.

I returned my last TOMTOM as it would not download map update ( I received error) and the traffic would just searc and search for hours never revealing any traffic issue... NOW I have the same issue with traffic on the Via 1435 and it took all night to download the map I think it installed it but will check POI's to be sure.

HP and other printers also make you turn off teh firewall for some installations so it is not unheard of but I do get leary.

Tiger Direct specialise in End Of Line and REFURBISHED RETURN hardware and they now have the VIA series etc.
This in itself speaks volumes and would hint that TomTom are dumping stock of these devices on a whole new group of unsuspecting people.
This also means that TomTom will be able to offload the warranty and repair of these units to give themselves some much needed breathing space.
The move speaks volumes and I would hint that TT are getting ready to phase out this line and sweep it under the carpet along with its customers

Does anyone know when TomTom will make updates available that were promised & if they will also allow you to remove voices or other files that you don't use as to free up room on the Via 1435?
It worked out great on the Go 720 with TomTom Home where you could easily manage files on it.
Why did TomTom change what worked????
