Unable to reset a VIA 160 - unable to un-mute

Hi there

Have just got a VIA160 about a month ago....All seemed wonderful in GPS land until I lost all sound. The unit showed as being muted.  Tried various ways of un-muting, selecting new voices, hot reset etc - nothing appeared to work.  Found the only way to get the sound back was to do  full reset (power button in for 20 sec) The unit worked fine for another week then had the sound get permanently muted again.  This time with a full factory reset I didn't get the drums and when it eventually restarts the speaker icon is still muted.  It is like the firmware is permanently muted. I tried a couple of resets now.  Still the same - no sound before/during/after a reset.

I had let the unit update using My Tom Tom so the firmware is current.  Has anybody else experienced this?  I'm awaiting an email back from support...but it's the weekend and I'm impatient :smileysurprised:

Cheers

Re: Unable to reset a VIA 160 - unable to un-mute

Try this:

1. Hold the ON/OFF button, until it reaches the info screen (black screen, white text)

2. After entering the info screen press the ON/OFF button 3 times quickly (it should be 3 presses within one second)

3. The device restarts and only shows a cogwheel, it just entered in the 'recovery mode'

4. Make sure to connect the TomTom device to the computer (so it can download the 'last known good application' for your device)

5. Wait until you see picture of a TomTom (red x) and a laptop, then switch off the TomTom unit

6. Then reset the device, and it should start up normally

7. Wait 5 minutes

Then you can try this as well, to make sure all up to date:

- Try to disable your antivirus and firewall, use Firefox, and make sure that your computer is not going into stand-by or similar.
- Clear the cache before each update attempt. Also could do a soft reset before and after the update.
- Make sure you have the latest Adobe Flash Player and Java installed.
- Make sure you have all the latest updates and hotfixes/patches to your OS.
- In case the device looks like hung during the update or the counter stopped, just leave it. It will be fine in a few minutes.
- Check your network connections, make sure that the TT's network adapter is enabled
- Try to uninstall and re-install the MyTomTom application

- Any further issue: Try it on another PC, try it with different USB lead (below steps are Windows specific)
- Whilst the device connected, remove the drivers from the Device Manager (Windows/Control Panel), DELETE the drivers
- Remove the MyTomTom application and run CCLEANER (will remove your history, cookies, etc by default)

Re: Unable to reset a VIA 160 - unable to un-mute

Hi Zsolt

Thanks for your quick help. So far it hasn't been successfull in removing the muted speaker.  The TT appears to do a reset but the drums can't be heard on the reset unfortunately.  I've tried using Firefox and resetting pre and post.  I'll check out the Solution for GPS and see how that goes.  Thanks again.

Hi

When you do a Drum-roll start there is a vertical Tomtom Logo which appears on the left side of the screen at the same time as the drum roll sounds. You could us this as a prompt to release the on/off switch.

Hi YFM

Thanks for your reply.  There is no sound at all unfortunately at all.  I knew to release the button :smileysurprised:) The full recovery should have worked - but it hasn't either .  Looks like I will need to contact TT Support   :smileysad:

Cheers. L

Re: Unable to reset a VIA 160 - unable to un-mute

Hi.

The unit did the recovery (thanks that was excellent help) but still no sound.  It shows like it is a program fault with the Muted Speaker Icon but getting no sound at all - even after the firmware recovery it looks like a hardware issue.  The GPS reset didn't work either.  Looks like I'll need to contact TT Support - Hopefully the support here in New Zealand wil be better than some of the experiences others have had :smileyhappy:  Thanks again for you help.

Cheers L

Re: Unable to reset a VIA 160 - unable to un-mute

TT Support (from Australia) very helpful.  Basically if the unit won't do a full reset it needs to be sent back for repair

............so my VIA is being sent to Auckland.  Hope this thread helps anyone else experiencing the same issue
