I'm getting very discouraged with my TomTom.... Arghhh..

I travel frequently to Europe on business.  So, I bought ($79.95!) western Europe & UK, and loaded it into my TomTom GO740.  Before I did so, I did a back-up using HOME of my USA maps so that on my return, I could swap out maps.  Now that I'm home, it appears that I cannot do that.  It won't let you back-up but a SINGLE map... It appears I now have to buy a new USA map (for another $79.95!!!!!), and that will wipe out my Europe maps!!!!!!!  Arghhh!  So: EVERY time I go to AND from Europe, I have to BUY NEW MAPS????

Can anyone out there give me a work around!!!   That's NUTS!  IF THIS IS TRUE, I'LL NEVER BUY ANOTHER TOMTOM EVERY AGAIN!!!!!!!!!  THAT IS EXTORTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When you do a backup in TomTom Home then it does make a full backup of the current state of your navigation device. When you have bought the Europe Map, this should still be available in the TomTom download folder of your computer, the USA map should also be stored in that location.

Step 1

  • Open TomTom Home;
  • Click on the button with 'Add traffic information, voices, speed camera's..', this should be the button at the first page located in the center above;
  • Click on the arrow 'more' untill you are at the 4th page (should be 3x times clicking on the arrow);
  • Click on the button 'items on my computer';
  • All the items listed are all the maps and other items that are previously been downloaded and installed to the navigation device;
  • Verify that both the USA map and Europe map is located here;

When the maps are onto your computer

  • Make a full backup once more;
  • Remove the 'Europe & UK' map from the device by going to the second page from the main menu by clicking on the button 'manage my navigation device';
  • Make sure you have the navigation device tab selected;

Backtrack to step 1 to install the desired map onto your navigation device.

  • In the 'all the items listed' which are onto the computer, there should be a install button next to each item;
  • Check if any updates are available;

Re: I'm getting very discouraged with my TomTom.... Arghhh..

Stefan:

Thanks SO MUCH!!!!  I NEVER would have figured that on my own... It worked perfectly, exactly as you set-out in this solution... I am so happy!!   And, I love my TomTom once again!!!!  Oh, that makes everything SO MUCH easier now when I go back and forth from the US to Europe!!   YES!!!  THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU.

While I have you - as you are obviously a TomTom genius AND I detect you might be from Europe - I do have a question involving use of the TomTom in the US vs. Europe.  Bear in mind I bought my TomTom (GO740) in the USA...

Here's my question: I notice with friends in Europe/UK who have a TomTom that they bought in Europe, that they are allowed to enter a POSTAL CODE for a "Navigate To" choice.  I say POSTAL CODE and NOT Zip Code as zip codes (USA) only contain numbers while European postal codes contain alphanumeric sequences.  With a European TomTom, you CAN enter alphanumeric postal codes, but with my USA TomTom - even with a Western European map downloaded into the device - you cannot enter an alphanumeric postal code... It's expecting to enter a numeric zip code when you select that navigation open.

Do you know a "workaround" so that when I travel with my GO740 to Europe, I can enter European alphanumeric POSTAL CODES for my "navigate to" command?

Thank you SO MUCH again for helping me out earlier/above!!!!

I have my US map on an SD card and simply use switch maps to go to it when in US.

Re: I'm getting very discouraged with my TomTom.... Arghhh..

Thanks... Very good idea!  Do you know: Can I use any SD card, or must it be purchased from TomTom (ie they have to format the card)?  It looks like it's a mini SD card.  Is that correct?  How big do I need?  Will 2 GB be sufficient?  Do I use HOME to manage the loading and swapping of maps on and off the SD card?

[ Edited ]

A mini SD card doesn't work.

The maximum capacity is 4 Gigabyte, and the type of the card should be 'SDHC' (Stands for: San Disk High Capacity). You can buy the SDHC card in any shop, it doesn't have to be from TomTom.

The SDHC card is already formatted.

Install the desired map onto the card

  • Insert the SDHC card into the TomTom;
  • Connect the device as usual (can be updated later with a card reader when desired but has to be first 'activated' when inserted in the navigation device);
  • TomTom should detect 2 storage drives (Internal drive from the navigation device and the SDHC card), and asks which one you would like to use (can be switched in TomTom Home in the menu);
  • Select the 'SDHC' card;
  • Install the desired map to the card (see the other post) :smileyhappy:
  • Check for updates;
  • Disconnect the navigation device from the computer, you should now be able to switch between the maps in the navigation device;

Next time the SDHC card can be updated by using a card reader (when wanting to install mapupdates for the specific map) or don't forget by performing a update, to also switch to the card and check for any mapupdates available (since the other map is installed onto the card instead of on the device).

Do you know a "workaround" so that when I travel with my GO740 to Europe, I can enter European alphanumeric POSTAL CODES for my "navigate to" command?

  • When a function isn't integrated into the navigation device by development, then its not possible to use. I'm afraid there's no workaround to make it work. I recommend not to try modifying the device software (by installing other navcore versions designed for other navigation devices,..) which would mess up the unit (since it may be difficult to get a working device back from scratch).
