Help adding a POI to my VIA 1500

I'm really having trouble creating a POI file.  I've tried several things so far:

- Creating a CSV text file as follows

;Longitude, Latitude, “Description”
43.86448,-78.82547,"Oshawa / Secret Spot"
43.90670502018687,-77.28697299957275,"Sandbanks Provincial Park"

- Converting the CSV to an OV2 with this link

http://tomtom.gps-data-team.com/poi/csv2ov2.php

Each time I can see the category, but when I try to navigate to POI's near my location, I get the same

"No POI found" message.

I'm new to this, and can't tell if my file is bad, my GPS, or something else I'm doing wrong.

Help!

Re: Help adding a POI to my VIA 1500

To show up POIs have to be within 50 miles of the location you pick. ie if you select 'POI near me' it has to be within 50 miles of your current location. Similarly if you select 'POI near city' it has to be within 50 miles of that city. This has changed from previous models that would find the POI regardless of the distance. I'm not sure why this limit was implemented but it has drawn a lot of criticisms. If you are like me and past your best, you never know what city the POI is near anyway which defeats the object of having the sat nav in the first place.

Re: Help adding a POI to my VIA 1500

[ Edited ]

Hi YamFazMan,

Thanks.  Good thought, but yes, these points are probably 25km from my current location. The POI file contains about 150 points, several less than 5km from my current location.

Is there some way I can figure out if I have a bad POI file, or a bad GPS unit?

Is there any way to verify a POI file? Some on-line service perhaps?

Two other thoughts:

1)  The category I'm adding shows on the TomTom with a red marker icon next to it.  I don't have an image for it.  Not sure if this matters or not.

2)  Does the file have to be in binary format, or can I add a CSV file of points.  I've tried both, but both error with the same "No POI found" message on the TomTom.

Bill

Re: Help adding a POI to my VIA 1500

OK, I've got it figured out.  I had the order of the  lat / lon switched (needs to be lon / lat), so it was "working" but not for any points near me in Ontario.  Feeling embarrased, and frustrated over 4 hours down the drain...
