Don't buy the "bargain" refurbished devices

Hello world,

since the German customer support does not reply to e-mails nor entries in the German support forum I give it a try in the English one.

Please understand this entry as a warning to all in terms of TomTom bargains and customer support - I missed them both:

This is my story:

I bought a refurbished Go Live 1005 device from the original TomTom website, since it seemed to be a good value-for-money ratio (189 EUR). It should have come with a free 2 year subscription for the Live Services...

What I got was a device with expired Live Services and a map dated 1/2011. In Germany the legal period for returns is 14 days after purchase for mail orders, but I wanted the device, so I contacted TomTom support by email.

Unfortunately nothing happend apart from an automatically generated  e-mail suggesting to get the GPS fix. Not helpful at all. No other reaction to e-mails or forum entries...

I started investigating my problem an figured out that this is a common issue with the refubished units. Especially the map issue is something the German website conceals - it says there is a map update guarantee for new TomToms. No hint (not even in small print in the footer line) that it does not apply to refurbished devices (might be a translation thing, but "new" is a bit ambiguous).

Result and warning to everybody:

  1. I didn't get the 2 years Live Services, which is -strictly speaking - a violation of the sales contract.
  2. Since the map is old TomTom offered to buy a new map for 70 Euros. In total the refurbished device with the most recent map would cost 260 EUR.  A NEW device with recent maps and no Live Service problem is currently available at 249 EUR from Amazon Germany - what a great deal...
  3. The customer service does not exist!

Finally, I could have missed a great deal of annoyance and could have saved money if I had not bought from the TomTom webshop!!!

Hopefully this helps everybody to reconsider to buy a refurbished unit from TomTom.

Re: Don't buy the "bargain" refurbished devices

Problem solved, thanks to TomTom's good will.

BUT: If you prefer a hassle-free way to get a TomTom go for a new device from your local dealer or preferred online shop.

Sometimes you can buy even new units (the same model) for very similar price, just have to find the right sale.
