My 14 month old GO1050 unit will shuts down as soon as I disconnect external power source. TomTom will not help because unit is out of warranty. Is this typical of TomTom quality?
Does anyone know if I can change the battery or if there is somewhere in Melbourne, Australia where I can get it done?

please access your preferences menu first. There may be the option set to turn the device off automatically if power supply is being lost. Please unmark this option and check again.

Ticking or unticking this preference makes no difference. Battery status shows 80% and green light is on but unit shuts down as soon as external power is disconnected.

Don't forget if you have a unit that the battery life has become shorter and shorter(down to 5 Min. or less) you should A. upgrade to a new model or B. replace the battery BEFORE the unit stops working and will not restart. The unit is intended to operate WITH a functional battery holding a reasonable charge OR in theary with NO battery installed but not a dead battery that will not charge. (I speak from expierence and learned the hard way with TomTom 720). The good news if you need a battery they are fairly inexspensive and you can pay a nominal fee for the install/upgrade to a Pro. or a kit is normally provided to do it your self.
*** changing your own battery will VOID the TomTom waranty ***
If under warranty call Tech. support ASAP.

that sounds very much like a broken battery. As agentss already described it usually is fairly inexpensive to purchase a new battery and let it be exchanged if you do not want to do it yourself. If you decide to install a new battery there are a few things to be looked after:
Those above are only the most important things

Check for your specific model the model finder, this is only one of a few good replacement battery sites
As mentioned before, most of these are kits that include tools for a DIY replacement
