Renault Carminat TomTom

I have a very unique problem with my TomTom. I have an ongoing tech support e-mail back and forth, but the issue is still not resolved. The problem is this, after I have updated the SD card, before I EVEN have chance to use the eject facility, the TomTom Home program crashes, causing Windows to look for a solution to the problem. Of course no solution is found. Unfortunately this also stops my internal card reader from working and being seen in explorer. To remedy the missing card reader, I have to re-boot my computer and hey presto, the reader is back up and running. To say that I am fed up to my back teeth with this happening, is an understatement and do wish for a resolution. Yesterday, I went to the Renault dealership and picked up a brand new SD card thinking that the card may be the problem. I put it in the card reader with anticipation. Lo and behold, after it had updated the card, yes you guessed it, TomTom Home crashed and yet again I had to re-boot my pc. I do wish that tech support would get to the bottom of this, as it is becoming extremely exasperating and my patience with TomTom is wearing very thin indeed, almost to the point of never updating the card again. If anyone has experienced the same problem and has found a solution or a work around, I would be very grateful to hear how the situation was resolved. Yours, a very irrate TomTom user.

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

This happens to me sometimes - try ensuring that you have the latest drivers for the card reader as that can cause a problem. I'm presuming that the crash is followed by a blue screen? If so, there is a memory dump stored on the root drive which may help someone who offers tech support for PCs identify the specific problem. Have you tried the card with a different PC/card reader with TomTom Home?

Have you had the same problem when using an SD card with any other application - say Picasa??? Or is it just TomTom Home?

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

No BSOD ( blue screen of death ) and I use other SD/SDHC cards in my reader, without ANY problems!!! It is only when I have updated the card and before I get a chance to eject the card, the TomTom Home program crashes :smileysad: It is ok if I don't update the card, it is only after the update that this happens.

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

Sorry Toots, it's obviously the application then - if it requires some 2nd line support from TT, I'd get your patience tuned, as built-in owners are definitely second class citizens here....

Strangely, neither Ditte nor anyone else has actually challenged me or answered me when I've made this assertion in a number of threads: I guess they realise it's true :smileysad:

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

Unfortunately, that avenue has already been explored :smileysad: I have un-installed and re-installed the application, yet the problem still remains. I have had an open ticket with tech support going on now since 07/03/2012 and I am realising that as a built-in owner, I am way down on their list of priorities :smileysad: I am awaiting a reply from Thursday and as of this morning, I am still waiting. I find TomTom to be of a low standard of customer care and I wish that the system was made by Garmin. At least they are of a reputable standing. One day the solution may be found, but until then, I am not holding my breath. An added point, I just used the spell check option and it doesn't even know the word realising. OMG how bad is this company????

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

Wow, I have had a reply, but!!!! They have no answers to my problem :smileyfrustrated::smileymad: They say that they have never come across this problem before and to try another computer, to see if it is mine that is causing the problem. Well I tried another computer and guess what??? It did exactly the same thing :smileymad::smileymad: So as I told them, the problem lies somewhere between the SD card and the program. They won't be told that it is their items that are at fault, sounds like a few other companies I know :smileysad: Never mind, I told them that I won't be bothering to update the blessed card again, as It is too much trouble re-booting my comp after every update. I wish I could rip it out of my car and be done with it GRRRRR.

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

I have the same problem with my SD card. When asking to TOMTOM application to disconnect SD Card , TOMTOM application break down and I get a message from windows. I use the ejected SD card in the car without problem. I do'nt have to reboot the PC.

Even if the symptomes are not identical but similar, I will follow the resolution with big interest.

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

Well I tried what you suggested and it didn't work. TomTom Home already recognises the sd card and after the card had updated, BEFORE I COULD EVEN PRESS THE EJECT BUTTON, GUESS WHAT?????? IT CRASHED THE TOMTOM HOME PROGRAM.....AGAIN !!!!!!! To say that I am really getting cheesed off with this is an undestatement. Everytime I update the card, and before I get a chance to eject...It ALWAYS crashes the program. Come on TomTom, get your act together and sort this problem out. Either you people know what you are doing, or you don't. Which is it???? I wish I had never had the unit in the first place. It's a disaster from start to finish. If anybody from there is reading this, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, sort this problem out before I get very annoyed. I await your reply, giving me the true fix to this problem. If you cannot fix it, then say so and I will not bother to update the card again. If you think you have a fix, make sure that the fix works, before you post, or I will just get frustrated.

Re: Renault Carminat TomTom

Just a thought.

(BY THE WAY, YOUR SD CARD ISN'T LOCKED BY ANY CHANCE IS IT? Very occasionally I snag the locking tab as I put the card into my card reader and set it to locked. That would create havoc).

Try reconnecting the SD card to Home. Then do NOT update the card. When it is recognised by Home, go to top left of Home and select Device, Disconnect Device (don't use the bottom right eject button). After Home says it is safe to disconnect/unplug, do NOT unplug, first close Home, then unplug. Put card back into Carminat and start it up. Then select the Carminat menu option to remove SD card, then remove it.

Go back to PC and reconnect and see how you get on this time. The problem sometimes is that Home and the card somehow don't shut down properly, leaving the SD card a bit dodgy. Doing all that laborious disconnecting thing above MIGHT cure it.

I'd also be tempted to get hold of another SD card (SD, as opposed to SDHC), using Explorer copy everything from the card to the new card. Make sure the new card works in the Carminat and if it does, try updating the new card. If all goes well, wipe and format the old card then copy it all back onto it.

For information, I've just been out and got my SD card out and brought it in to try updating. It had Application 8.842 and map v885. The only update which happened was the uploading of a mapshare correction from me. I have never downloaded the QuickGPS Fix (on any of my TomTom devices) and I have disabled mapshare downloads (again on all my devices). No problems here. If your Carminat is already on Application 8.842, I'd say it's got to be one of those other downloads causing the problem - what does it offer you as updates?

On the other hand, if you registered here three weeks ago and that's when you bought your car/carminat, go back to Renault and play hell - tell them to take it out and fit a new one that works!! My van came with a two year unlimited mileage warranty (20 months ago) so if I had that problem it'd be going in under guarantee (with a lot of pressure to get my business transport working properly very pronto and a loan vehicle whilst they fix mine).
