Problems with New SD card & New Map

Hi all

Before I go completely mad with frustration I was wondering if any of you could kindly help me resolve a few problems I seem to be having with dear old TOMTOM......

Just changed my car to one with Carminat (2011 model) although I've been a TOMTOM user for many years (other current device GO 940)

The Carminat came with a 2 Gb SD card and the UK ROI map. I needed the full Europe map and I've purchased a second copy (the 1st is on my 940). As I'm sure you’re aware that map is too big for the card I have so I needed to transfer all to a new 4 Gb SD card.

This is when my problem starts I've followed the instructions about initialising the new card by placing it the sat nav but despite the device creating the "loopdir" directory and creating the file TOMTOM home says the card is not initialised!!!

When I compare the created file with the one on the original card it has a different name. I tried copying the file from the original card and Home seems to recognise it bur when I go to transfer the Europe map it tells me I'm several Gb short of the required space, or if install the UK ROI map it allows me to do so but when I plug it in to the car it says I can't use that map on this device!!!

I found in the forum a work round for the "not enough space / TOMTOM thinking the map is a lot bigger than it really is problem, which I tried and managed to get the new map on the new SD card only to get the same "can't use that map on this device"

So to date I've spent £70 on cards and maps and the !*?$ system refuses to let me use them,!!!!!! ...........am I coming across as a tad frustrated?.... I can't think why!

Any help gratefully received.

This webpage may help:

Seems to imply SD (2GB?) only in your device

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

Thanks for the quick response. I had seen the link but as TOMTOM were quite happy to sell me a map bigger than 2Gb in size it suggests that you can exceed that limit.

I've also just found out they also sell a 4Gb card, and a 4 Gb card with the Europe Map for Carminat so I guess that confirms it is possible

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

May I suggest try the following...

Using Windows Explorer (or Mac Finder)

1. Delete EVERYTHING from your new 4GB SD card.

2. Copy everything from your original 2GB card to the new one.

3. Insert new card with old (small) map into Carminat and start it. Hopefully it will work.

4. Delete old map from new card.

5. Ask Home to update and with luck it should offer the new map you bought.

You will, during the above, start Home. No need to close it, but ignore it and use Explorer (or Finder) until step 5.

One small point - did you register the Carminat SD card in Home with a DIFFERENT email ID from your 940? And did you buy the new map under that new email ID? If not, you're in difficulty and need to speak to Customer Services to fix it. (Phone 0845 161 0009)

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

Carminat

Thanks for the help, tried your suggestion but no joy the system still gives a message telling me I can’t use this map on this device. In fact I tried it on 3 different SD cards all with the same result.

As to accounts I transferred my existing account to the Carminat and opened a new account (different email) for the 940. The new map was purchased on the Carminat account.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

I think models that use the SDHC cards now will handle 8 GB and up (starting with version 8.3).

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

I rang the support helpline and they talked me through the process.

First mistake - the original map was sold already on the SD card so cannot be copied to any other card.

Second mistake - the sat nav device needs to be switched on without a card in the slot and only after you get the message "no maps installed" do you put the new card in. This then initialises correctly.

Third mistake- The new map needs to be downloaded and installed on the new initialised card in one go. This failed originally as the map file thought it was too big for the card by 10's of Gb, anyway deleting the map off the computer and then using "update my device" to re-download and install on the card in one action solved the problem and it's now working fine

Thanks to all of you for your help especially Steve from the Support Helpline

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

[ Edited ]

Hi

I am VERY interested in your problem because I have just had EXACTLY the same problem.

I have a Tom Tom 2 gig card for the whole of Europe which I purchased from Tom Tom a couple of years ago and now want to update with the latest maps.

I paid 71Euros and when I clicked on "download" it said "not enough room on the SD card"!!

However the next day I got an e mail from the Swiss Tom Tom agent saying that my credit card had been debited!!

Did your 4 Gig card work ok because I have been told that the built in Carminat system in my 2010 Renault Scenic will NOT read an SD card bigger that 2 gig.

Please reply to me directly.

My email is xxxxxxxxxxxxxx@xxxxxxxxxxxx

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Re: Problems with New SD card & New Map

I looked at the TomTom Support (happened to be United Kingdom), and they do offer a 4GB SD card for the Carminat. They suggest the one they have will work best in your Carminat. http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/products/accessories/products/4gb-sd-memory-card-for-carminat-tomtom/
