Set the on screen language to French and the street names will come up in French.

You can still use an english voice for the navigation.

Re: Living in Brussels - Street Names in French - not Dutch

I'm glad to see a solution but as I beligum citizen, last I check both french & flemish were our two main national languages and when I recently went back to belgium for a trip with my tomtom and my language set to English, I was amazed, shocked and a bit disgusted that I was not prompted to choose which language to choose and it was automatically set to flemish!!!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not pro french or pro flemish as my dad is "french" and my mother is "flemish", but both are belgium at the end of the day and as I said, I just don't find it right that one language should be given priority over the other... This is the reason Belgium is in the state it's in among many other reasons!!

Not impressed at all TomTom!!

Re: Living in Brussels - Street Names in French - not Dutch

I was on the Brussels "Ring", on the exit to E411 to Namur. The "synthetised" voice of my new Carminat TomTom told Namen instead of Namur! But pronouced it -Namant- with a splendid French speaking accent ! The phenomenon is more evident here in Luxembourg, where I live. Trier becomes -Trié-, Strassen becomes -Strassant-. Not a single place is pronounced correctly. However, if you select another "not synthetised" voice they never tell any name. So, there is no solution at this problem currently.

THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE !!!

I have a suggestion which is in place in japanese embarqued GPS: Please tell the names in the LOCAL language pronounciation of the place, except if you have recorded the name in the language version selected by the GPS user.

For names in the Brussels Region, which is a bilingual Region, IT IS MANDATORY to record them in both FRENCH and DUTCH, and to select the appropriate version according to the language selected by the GPS user !!!

TomTom has to made its own evolution RIGHT KNOW !!!

Re: Living in Brussels - Street Names in French - not Dutch

This option seems to work only partially; yes, now the menu is all in French; secondly the large plan of the route seems to have the street names in French. Yet, when you begin the route, the map changes to Flemish again:smileysad: Thus - on the top of the screen you see for example "Boulevard du Regent" and on the map "Bichopflaan".... Interesting, isn't it.... and quite exchausting. Even that I've lived here for 5,5 years, and speak well one of the national languages, as a foreigner I find it very difficult to follow the street names that are translated, and therefore completely different in each language. You must know the culture of the country to know that the street name "Bob and Bobette" is "Suske en Wiske" (sorry for possible misspelling).

Tom-Tom- do you think you can do better than that? Would I have known, I would have purchased a separate GPS for almost the same price (nearly 100EUR), which works properly, and not this application.

Same problem in the dual-language region of Galicia in Spain. TomTom's, as well as the "other lot"`s, maps show a mixture of Gallego (local) and Castelleno (national) versions of road names. The problem comes when inputting a name in a search - you're never sure which language to use.

Re: Living in Brussels - Street Names in French - not Dutch

I have a tomtom "factory installed" on a Renault car sold in Belgium, and there is NO WAY to have a map with the names of the street in French (wel,I did not find in any case). It's strange: there are less than 8% Dutch native speakers in Brussels....I'd like to have a map with streets name in my langage...

Something else, I did not find a voice being able to pronounce correctly the names of the streets,as soon as this is not "pure" French; but maybe this is normal? (computer voice)
